A term for the early homesteaders who plowed up (broke) the tough prairie sod to farm the Great Plains, often building sod houses from the cut turf. In Nebraska it carries pride about pioneer heritage and appears in place names, mascots, and festivals. It is used across the Plains states settled under the Homestead Act.
