Jockey box

In Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, eastern Washington, and parts of Utah, the dashboard compartment everyone else calls a glove box is a jockey box. The term comes from the small storage compartment on horse-drawn freight wagons — 'jockey' being an old word for the driver — and it stuck around in the regions settled by wagon trains. The Dictionary of American Regional English maps it almost exclusively to the Northwest interior.
