Tolo

A Tolo is a high-school or college dance at which the women do the inviting — what the rest of the U.S. calls a Sadie Hawkins. The name was coined at the University of Washington in 1909 by a women's honor society; 'tolo' is a Chinook Jargon word originally borrowed from the Kalapuya of Oregon's Willamette Valley meaning 'to win' or 'to earn.' Outside Washington (and a few pockets of Idaho and Oregon) nobody recognizes the term.
