Filberts and hazelnuts are the same nut, but Oregonians — who grow 99% of the U.S. commercial crop — used 'filbert' almost exclusively until 1981, when the Oregon Filbert Commission rebranded to 'hazelnut' for broader market appeal. The name traces back to French settlers in the Willamette Valley, who honored St. Philibert (whose feast day falls during hazelnut harvest). Old Oregon orchards, brands like Filberts.com, and longtime locals still say 'filbert.'
