What does “tarheel” mean

Nickname for a North Carolinian. Traces to NC's 18th- and 19th-century dominance in producing tar, pitch and turpentine from its pine forests — laborers' bare heels stuck to the sticky stuff. Originally a slur thrown at NC Confederate soldiers in 1862, embraced as a badge of toughness.
