haint

Appalachian word for a ghost — specifically a malevolent or troubled one. Tied to the folk tradition of 'haint blue', a pale blue paint used on porch ceilings to ward off spirits. The word and the color migrated from the Gullah-Geechee Lowcountry up into the southern Appalachians.
