What does “painter” mean

Old Appalachian pronunciation/variant of 'panther', used for the now mostly-extirpated Eastern cougar. 'Painter scream's enough to freeze your blood.' Survives in older speakers and folk tales, where the painter is a near-mythic predator of the hollers.
