An anglicized slurring of the French 'bois d'arc' ('wood of the bow'), referring to the Maclura pomifera tree, also called Osage orange, hedge apple, or horse apple. Native to Arkansas and neighboring states, its hard wood was prized for bows and fence posts, and its large green fruit is a familiar roadside sight.
