Arkansawyer

First recorded in 1874, 'Arkansawyer' competes with 'Arkansan' (the official demonym since a 1939 state law) and the more casual 'Arkie'. People who insist on Arkansawyer often back it with the slogan 'There is no Kansas in Arkansas' — pointing at the state's silent-'s' pronunciation 'AR-kan-saw'. It survives mostly in Ozark communities and in the work of folklorists like Vance Randolph.
