What does “June Gloom” mean

The thick gray marine layer that smothers the Southern California coast through May and June, leaving Santa Monica overcast and 65 F while Pasadena is sunny and 85. Locals call the prelude 'May Gray,' and inland tourists are routinely shocked to spend a beach week never seeing the sun before noon. The layer usually burns off by early afternoon, then rolls back in at sunset.
