Local term for the Richardson's ground squirrel, common across the northern Plains and named for the way it flicks its short tail before diving into a burrow. North Dakota is nicknamed 'the Flickertail State,' the animal has been on legislative seals and tourism literature, and the word is essentially unknown outside the Dakotas.
