sugar cream pie

A custard-style pie of cream, sugar, flour and vanilla baked into a single crust, often dusted with cinnamon. Brought to Indiana by Quaker, Shaker and Amish settlers in the early 1800s; nicknamed 'desperation pie' for its pantry-only ingredient list. The Indiana Senate declared it the unofficial state pie in 2009, and Wick's Pies of Winchester ships about 3.6 million a year.
