Stick season

The brown, leafless, snow-less stretch from roughly late October through early December when Vermont's hills look like a thicket of grey sticks. Tourists vanish, inns slow down, and Vermonters quietly enjoy having the state back. The Burlington-born songwriter Noah Kahan made the term widely known beyond Vermont, but it remains a New England (and especially Vermont) frame of mind.
