What does “spa” mean

In Massachusetts (especially around Boston), a 'spa' is an old-fashioned word for a small neighborhood corner store selling groceries, soda-fountain drinks, sandwiches and miscellaneous goods. Many vintage signs still read 'Soda Spa' or 'Lunch Spa'.
