Vidalia onion

The variety was discovered by accident in 1931 when Toombs County farmer Moses Coleman planted what he thought were hot onions and got mild sweet ones instead, thanks to the area's low-sulfur sandy soil. The Vidalia Onion Act of 1986 trademarked the name and fixed the production zone, and in 1990 Georgia named the Vidalia its official state vegetable. Tattnall County alone grows more than half the annual crop.
