What does “the T” mean

What Bostonians call the MBTA's subway, light rail, and bus rapid transit network, Red, Orange, Blue, Green, and Silver lines. The Tremont Street section of the Green Line opened in 1897 and is the oldest subway tunnel still in use in North America. Locals say 'take the T,' never 'take the subway.'
