Lake-effect snow

When cold Canadian air sweeps across the relatively warmer Great Lakes, it picks up moisture and dumps it as narrow, intense snow bands on the downwind shore. Buffalo, Erie, and Cleveland live and die by it: a single storm can drop multiple feet on one neighborhood while the next town over stays dry.
