What does “Derecho” mean
A widespread, long-lived band of severe thunderstorms with destructive straight-line winds, often hurricane force, that can scythe across hundreds of miles in a single afternoon. The August 2020 Iowa derecho leveled millions of acres of corn and gutted Cedar Rapids; the 2012 mid-Atlantic derecho left millions without power in a heat wave. Most common from the Plains across the Ohio Valley, May through August.
