What does “chili con carne” mean

Literally 'chili peppers with meat' in Spanish. Designated the official state dish of Texas in 1977. Popularized nationally by the 'Chili Queens' of San Antonio from the 1860s through the 1930s. Differs from Mexican cooking in its heavy use of meat and cumin and its omission of beans in the orthodox Texas version.
