Spam musubi

Hawaii's most beloved snack: a slab of grilled, often teriyaki-glazed Spam laid over a rectangular block of sushi rice and wrapped together with a strip of nori, descended from Japanese onigiri. It emerged after World War II, when canned Spam flooded the islands, and was popularized in the 1980s by Mitsuko Kaneshiro at City Pharmacy in Honolulu and Barbara Funamura on Kauai. Today every Hawaii 7-Eleven, gas station, and L and L Hawaiian Barbecue stocks them.
