Plate lunch

The unofficial state lunch of Hawaii: two scoops of white rice, a scoop of mayo-heavy macaroni salad, and a hot entree like chicken katsu, kalua pork, teriyaki beef, or loco moco, all crammed into a styrofoam clamshell. It grew out of the bento meals that Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, and Filipino plantation workers carried in the 1880s, and the multi-cuisine mix is the point. Order a 'mixed plate' to get two entrees.
