Yuengling, founded in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829, is the oldest operating brewery in the United States, and its Traditional Lager is so dominant in eastern Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia metro that locals order it in bars by simply asking for 'a lager.' Outside that region a bartender would ask which lager; in Philadelphia, Pottsville, or the Lehigh Valley they will pour a Yuengling without a follow-up. The shorthand is a quiet regional identity marker.
